Mourning family, associates, friends, fellow players, friends of sport from Hungary and abroad,
On behalf of the two living members of the Golden Team, Gyula Grosics and myself, and of the footballers then and now I should like to bid Ferenc Puskás a final farewell. I should like to thank those who loved and respected Ferenc Puskás.
My appreciation goes also to the doctors and nurses who, in his last 6 years, made every effort to prolong his life and alleviate his pains.
We have come to bid a final farewell to the much-respected and loved Ferenc Puskás, one of the greatest football players in the world.
János Eszterházy, a renowned public figure between the two World Wars from Upper Hungary once said, “Only the nation capable of respecting its elders and holding them in exemplary esteem shall deserve a better fate and eternal life.”
Ferenc Puskás devoted his life to football playing and was a true friend and a sportsman on and outside the field. On the field he remained a genius, and a human being in life.
He wrote his name in the “Golden Book” that records the great deeds and world heritage of the Hungarians. That will preserve his name for ever, for the Hungarians of the 21st century and the future millennia.
The name, game, personality of Ferenc Puskás hallmarks an outstanding chapter of Hungarian and international football, which will never be effaced by the endlessness of time. The great Transylvanian writer Albert Wass once wrote, “Time is an immense waterway! Immense and eternal... Nought shall keep it back or change it! Without his past and memories, man cannot be a true man!”
Everlastingly loved friend, Öcsi Puskás... up in the celestial world above, be proud of your life, your career, the love of men.
We are happy to have played together in the Hungarian national team to the glory of the Hungarian nation, and to have heard so often the heart-warming, invigorating sounds of the national anthem.
But also happy are all the people who cheered you on.
Now a whole nation and the whole world grieves!
We hope you meet up there in heaven Gellér, Lóránt, Lantos, Bozsik, Zakariás, Budai, Kocsis, Hidegkuti, Czibor, Guszti Sebes and the other football stars!
A star fewer on Earth, one more in the Sky now shines!
When looking up to the sky, we shall find the brightest of all – your star!
With a grieving heart we bid you farewell!
We shall never forget... your memory lives forever!
May you rest in peace... in eternal tranquillity.
Ferenc Puskás of all Hungarians, the greatest Hungarian captain of all times!
Uncle Öcsi, Farewell!
